Re-brand or Re-structure: the options for Nigeria

January 15, 2010

After all the ink has flowed from the fount of Nigeria’s intelligentsia and commentators, over a riverbed formed by surely drowned masses and sunk Human Hope, let us boil down the options for the solution to the problem that is Nigeria to:

1) “Re-brand” Nigeria; or: 2) “Re-structure” Nigeria
So as not to get lost in already repeated arguments, I will keep this really short.

Re-branding of Nigeria includes: any more elections in Nigeria; any more tweaking of any of the several constitutions of Nigeria; recycling of so-called leaders; (s)election of a new crop of so-called leaders; military coups; “palace” coups; any coups; “Rawlings treatment”; and even status quo.

Re-structuring of Nigeria includes: any re-alignment of ethnic sovereign nations in consenting and mutually beneficial, equitable relationships; independence of sovereign ethnic nations free to pursue the fulfillment of their own respective people at their own pace and in their own style, within the bounds of international law and internationally accepted practices.

Obviously, Re-branding Nigeria has not and will not move anyone forward. It is time to face Re-structuring. There is no guarantee that a Revolution in Nigeria today—peaceful or not—will not lead to Re-branding; in fact, it appears that that is the goal of such-minded: it will have resulted in the same quagmire, a waste of a revolution. But, Re-structuring can be accomplished with a well-planned Sovereign National Conference among all the sovereign ethnic nations; it can be orderly and non-violent, though still extremely rough-going. If a Revolution has that as a goal, it will be the most effective and desirable revolution in Africa.

“Re-brand Nigeria” or “Re-structure Nigeria”: who and how do you want to die, who and how do you want to live—really live?
